Ingredients
For the Cookies
- 1 cup (227g) unsalted butter, softened well
- 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup (50g) brown sugar
- 2 large eggs, room temperature
- 1 tsp (5ml) vanilla extract
- 1 tsp (5ml) natural orange emulsion
- 1-2 drops orange food coloring (optional)
- 3 cups (375g) all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp (8g) cornstarch
- 1 tsp (5g) baking soda
- 1 tsp (5g) baking powder
- 1/2 tsp (3g) salt
For the Icing
- 8 oz (226g) cream cheese, softened well
- 8 tbsp (113g) unsalted butter, softened well
- 1/2 tsp (2.5ml) vanilla extract
- 1/2 tsp (2.5ml) natural orange emulsion
- 3 1/2 cups (420g) powdered sugar
For Topping
- 1/2 tbsp fresh orange zest
- 1 orange, sliced into small wedges
Instructions
1. Cream Butter and Sugars: In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
2. Add Wet Ingredients: Mix in the eggs one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract, orange extract, and food coloring (if using).
3. Combine Dry Ingredients: Gradually add the flour, cornstarch, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Mix until the dough just comes together—do not overmix.
4. Scoop and Prep: Scoop dough into large 3.75 oz balls. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet and gently press down to slightly flatten.
5. Bake: Bake at 350°F for 11–13 minutes. Pro Tip: Slightly underbake them for that signature soft Crumbl texture.
6. Shape: Immediately after removing from the oven, use a circular glass or bowl to “scoot” the cookies into perfect circles. Let them cool completely.
7. Make the Icing: Beat the cream cheese and butter until smooth. Add the extracts and gradually mix in the powdered sugar until fluffy.
8. Decorate: Once cookies are cool, pipe a thick swirl of icing onto each cookie. Top with fresh orange zest and a small orange wedge.

Tips for Success
• Test Your Oven: Every oven is calibrated differently. Bake one “test cookie” first to find your perfect timing.
• The “Cookie Scoot”: For those perfectly round edges, use a round glass larger than the cookie and move it in a circular motion around the cookie right as it comes out of the oven.
• Room Temp Ingredients: Ensure your eggs and dairy are at room temperature to prevent the batter from curdling and to ensure a smooth icing.
Storage and Freshness
• Storage: Because of the cream cheese icing, these cookies must be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
• Freshness: They are best enjoyed within 4-5 days. If you prefer them soft, let them sit at room temperature for about 15 minutes before serving.
• Freezing: You can freeze the unfrosted cookie bases for up to 3 months. Thaw and frost fresh for the best results.
