If you’ve been on my TikTok lately, you may have seen these individual cake tins taking over your For You Page! This recipe went viral with over 500,000 views and counting, for good reason. It’s the perfect blend of a traditional Mexican Tres Leches and the classic crunch of an Oreo cookie. Watching the milk soak into that dark cocoa sponge is just as satisfying as the first bite!
This isn’t just a standard cake; it’s an experience. We start with a black cocoa, Oreo crumb-infused base, soak it in a velvety three-milk mixture, and top it off with Oreo whipped cream. Whether you’re serving these in individual tins for a party or as a large sheet cake, this recipe is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser.
Ingredients
The Chocolate Oreo Cake Base
- 2 cups (250g) All-Purpose Flour
- 1 cup (100g) Finely Crushed Oreo Crumbs
- 3/4 cup (75g) Black Cocoa Powder (to deepen the Oreo flavor)
- 2 tsp (10g) Baking Soda
- 2 tsp (10g) Baking Powder
- 1 tsp (6g) Salt
- 1 3/4 cups (350g) Granulated Sugar
- 1 tbsp (15ml) Pure Vanilla Extract
- 3 Large Eggs, room temperature
- 1 cup (240ml) Buttermilk, room temperature (can sub whole milk)
- 1 cup (240ml) Hot Water (not boiling)
- 1/2 cup (120ml) Vegetable Oil
The Signature Milk Soak
- 1 can (14oz) Sweetened Condensed Milk
- 1 can (12oz) Evaporated Milk
- 2 cups (480ml) Whole Milk
- 2 tsp (10ml) Vanilla Extract
The Oreo Whipped Cream Topping
- 2 1/2 cups (600ml) Cold Heavy Cream
- 1/2 cup (60g) Powdered Sugar
- 1 tsp (5ml) Vanilla Extract
- 1/2 to 2/3 cup Crushed Oreo Pieces (adjust to your preference)
- Extra Whole Oreos and crumbs for garnish
Instructions
1. Prep the Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, finely crushed Oreo crumbs, black cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Ensure there are no large cocoa clumps for a smooth batter.
2. Mix the Wet Ingredients
In a separate bowl, combine the sugar, vanilla, eggs, buttermilk, and vegetable oil. Whisk until smooth. Slowly pour in the hot water while whisking continuously.
3. Combine and Bake
Gradually fold the wet ingredients into the dry until just combined. Pour the batter into your individual tins or a greased 9×13 baking pan. Bake at 350°F for 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
4. The Three-Milk Soak
While the cake is cooling slightly, whisk together the condensed milk, evaporated milk, whole milk, and vanilla. Poke holes all over the warm cake with a fork or skewer. Slowly pour the milk mixture over the cake, allowing it to absorb completely. Pro-Tip: Let the cake chill in the fridge for at least 4 hours for the best texture.
5. Whip the Topping
In a chilled bowl, beat the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla until stiff peaks form. Gently fold in the crushed Oreo pieces.
6. Garnish and Serve
Pipe or spread the Oreo whipped cream over the soaked cake. Finish with a sprinkle of Oreo crumbs and a whole Oreo cookie on each serving.
Tips For Success
• Keep it Cold: Because of the milk soak and fresh whipped cream, this cake must be stored in the refrigerator. It tastes even better on day two!
Use Black Cocoa: To get that authentic “Oreo” flavor and deep dark color, try to find Black Cocoa powder. It’s less acidic and has that specific chocolate taste we all love.
• The “Test Poke”: Use a fork or a wooden skewer to poke holes every half-inch. More holes mean a more even distribution of that delicious milk soak!
• Stabilize the Cream: Ensure your heavy cream and bowl are ice cold before whipping. This ensures your topping stays fluffy and doesn’t deflate when you add the Oreo crumbs.
Storage & Freshness
Keep this cake refrigerated until the moment you’re ready to serve. It stays fresh and delicious for up to 6 days, making it the ultimate make-ahead party dessert.
